The Gaia Hotel Bandung Commits to Sustainability Efforts
Hotel News \Bandung, March 2023 – The Gaia Hotel Bandung has been doing a series of sustainability initiatives to play its part in giving back to the environment. With a name that translates to earth or Mother Nature, it has been Gaia’s calling from the beginning to bring positive impacts to the nature and the creatures that inhabit it.
This commitment is evident first from the hotel’s architecture and interior design that focus on the open-air concept, improving air circulation and efficiency in air conditioning system throughout the hotel’s four towers sprawling across 16 floors. The pristine natural surroundings, as well as Bandung’s natural cool climate and fresh mountain air allow ideal air flow and seamless harmony between the indoor and the outdoor. This initiative has reduced the hotel’s energy cost down to half of the hotel industry average for energy use.
Another initiative that has been successfully implemented by Gaia is reducing plastic waste by eliminating single-use plastic. The hotel has created its own water bottling facility and removed all plastic bottles from the rooms and throughout the premises, saving approximately 24,000 plastic bottles per month. All the in-room amenities have also switched to biodegradable packaging. In addition, Gaia appeals to partnering suppliers to use reusable containers for transportation of fresh produce instead of plastic bags.

The Gaia Hotel Bandung is also determined to tackle the biggest environmental challenge in the hospitality industry: food waste. The hotel makes conscious, committed and continuous efforts in reducing food waste, including emphasizing on made-to-order or à la minute cooking options and alternative serving methods which not only reduce food waste but also ensure that food are served fresh.
Furthermore, the hotel processes waste from organic fresh fruits and vegetable pulps to produce eco enzyme that can be used as organic fertiliser and pesticide. Together with the compost from the compostable waste, the organic fertiliser eco enzyme is sent to our suppliers, one of which is Jaya Alam Lestari Farm that supplies fruits and vegetables to the hotel. Last but not least, the low-protein cooked food is repurposed as food for the farm animals.

Complementing Gaia’s eco-friendly initiatives are facilities such as greenhouses and electric vehicles charging stations. Gaia also takes pride in its 1 hectare of land in Pasir Wangi, just 2 km away from the hotel, which is used as the hotel’s own farm and gardens. The land is also home to the natural water source that Gaia bottles for the guests’ consumption, making the sustainability journey come full circle.
